My mums once told me
You just wait until
You grow older
And have your own little girl
You'll see just how hard
It is to raise her right
Cos she will be, just like me, causing many sleepless nights
She use to lay awake at night
Hoping I had heard
All those times she tried to teach me
Did I listen to a word
Cos mums have this thing
A feeling deep inside
Its called a mother's instinct
And who knew - its always right
So now I am older
And yes, I had a girl
And sure my mum was right
My daughter is my whole world
She really is just like me
In far too many ways
And my mother's instinct has kicked in
So now I wonder if she hears what I say
Sometimes she takes it in
And sometimes its a good thing
Cos at times she's the one who teaches me
Her life is different so keep listening
So yea.. I may know better
I may have learned a thing or 3
But her life is different to mine
So all I can do is tell my story
Then leave that with her
To figure out her own way
Cos even though it looks the same as me
She has the opportunity
To hear what advice I had from my mum
Then hear my own experience too
From there she has all the info
To carefully choose what she will do
Then if her attempt fails to go right
At least she knows I'm here
Cos I told her no matter what, I'll catch her
I made that very clear
There's no shame in failing
When you're figuring out what works for you
But now and then mums do know best
After learning a thing or 2
When they were young and did certain
Things over and over again
Ignored their mum or didn't even ask
So got stuck all because of being stubborn
Thats why she passed that on
So I wouldn't find myself in that same
Horrible horrible situation
Where there is only you left to blame
Cos some things are so devastating
To go through as a teen
So dont even get close to this part over here
And instead focus on you & ignore that whole scene
Its not worth it. Trust your mum
If she ever says that to you
That usually means no matter how you do it
There's no positive pathway through
Mums are a little more harsh
On their daughters than sons
Thats because they are trying to teach you
How to fight for yourself since its a hard one
Cos girls are naturally soft inside
They find it hard to be safe and guard
Especially when it comes to love
So thats why she can come across as hard
And you may not see it now
Its the best thing for you to do
And one day you might find out what its like
When you have a daughter who is just like you.
