Prompt / Lyrics
Only the dead have seen the end of war. Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? And I said, Here am I. Send me! Cowards die many times before their deaths; the soldier never tastes death but once. If a man hasn't discovered something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live. A true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him but because he loves what is behind him. A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles. America without her soldiers, would be like God without his angels. There is nothing nobler than risking your life for your country. I have long believed that sacrifice is the pinnacle of patriotism. This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave. War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. YOU HAVE NEVER LIVED UNTIL YOU HAVE ALMOST DIED, AND FOR THOSE WHO CHOOSE TO FIGHT, LIFE HAS A SPECIAL FLAVOR, THE PROTECTED WILL NEVER KNOW! I WAS THAT WHICH OTHERS DID NOT WANT TO BE. I WENT WHERE OTHERS FEARED TO GO, AND DID WHAT OTHERS FAILED TO DO. I ASKED NOTHING FROM THOSE WHO GAVE NOTHING, AND RELUCTANTLY ACCEPTED THE THOUGHT OF ETERNAL LONELINESS SHOULD I FAIL I HAVE SEEN THE FACE OF TERROR: FELT THE STINGING COLD OF FEAR; AND ENJOYED THE SWEET TASTE OF A MOMENT'S LOVE. I HAVE CRIED, PAINED, AND HOPED. BUT MOST OF ALL, I HAVE LIVED TIMES OTHERS WOULD SAY WERE BEST FORGOTTEN. AT LEAST SOMEDAY I WILL BE ABLE TO SAY THAT I WAS PROUD OF WHAT I WAS A SOLDIER. UNTIL I AM OUT OF AMMO OR I AM OUT OF BLOOD I WILL FIGHT FOR AMERICA. May no Soldier go unloved May no soldier walk alone May no Soldier be forgotten May no soldier be left behind when they return home!
