Head Full of No, Dash Full of Yes

Driving south with a cracked-up past,

Highway humming, tank on half.

She left a toy on my dashboard—

Said it fit me… I guess she knew.

Got in a fight, she slammed that door,

Said she ain’t doing this no more.

Lost my job this morning too,

Whole damn world came unglued.

I should’ve gone straight home, faced the truth…

But truth don’t drink like a bottle do.

Now it’s me and that nodding dog,

Head just bobbing like he knows it all.

Asked him where I oughta go—

He just grins and rocks me “so-so.”

Yeah it’s me and that plastic friend,

Riding roads that don’t have ends.

I say, “Ain’t nothing left, you see?”

And that damn dog keeps agreeing with me.

One drink turned into ten too fast,

Time slipped through like broken glass.

By the time I made it home that night,

We lit the fuse on the final fight.

Words like knives, silence like stone,

Now the house don’t feel like home.

So I grabbed my keys, didn’t look back—

Just me and him on a midnight track.

Yeah it’s me and that nodding dog,

Head just bouncing through it all.

Asked him if she’s really gone—

He just nods like, “Yeah, move on.”

Now it’s me and that empty seat,

Miles of dark under worn-out wheels.

I say, “Ain’t nothing left for me…”

And that damn dog keeps agreeing with me.

I asked him, “Should I turn around?”

He just nodded like a clown.

“Should I stay or should I run?”

He said both without saying one.

“Should I fill up, keep this ride?”

He bobbed along like he chose my side.

Funny how a fool like me

Finds truth in cheap plastic company.

Now it’s me and that nodding dog,

Driving through what I can’t outrun.

Don’t know if I’m leaving or coming back,

Just chasing lines down a faded map.

I say, “Road ends somewhere, right?”

He just nods in the dashboard light.

Guess he’s all I got to see—

That damn dog… and the worst of me.

I say, “Right, Scooby?” in the dark…

He just nods like it’s all a joke.

So I drive…

Till I don’t know where I am…

Or don’t care anymore.
