Prompt / Lyrics
It was the last day of summer when I was turning ten. We were leaving the next day to start again. Momma cried the night before we left for Colorado. Daddy grabbed her and danced and twirled her around and he said I’m gonna love you like we ain’t leaving tomorrow Like we ain’t leaving tomorrow. Like we ain’t packing our bags. Like we ain’t chancing everything that we have to get back that feeling. Like starting again. Stop playing pretend and just start living. It was the night before I left. She couldn’t catch her breath. The time had come for me to go. That army life can treat you cold. She said how much time can we borrow. and I said baby I’m gonna love you like I’m not leaving tomorrow. Like i ain’t leaving tomorrow. Like i ain’t packing my bags. Like i ain’t chancing everything that we have to get back that feeling. Like starting again. Stop playing pretend and just start living. I knelt down to kiss daddy’s face as he reached for me with a warm embrace. His days were fading and his heart was racing as he said what I had always heard. Son, I’m gonna love you like I ain’t leaving tomorrow. Like I ain’t leaving tomorrow
