Don’t Overthink It (Too Late)

I said it wasn’t anything at all

just something small, I didn’t think it mattered

laughed it off so it didn’t stay heavy

kept it light like it never meant anything

I’m fine, just a long day really

nothing new, just tired in a normal way

kept my voice steady, kept it casual

like it was easy, like it didn’t matter

I watched the moment pass like it was nothing

but I still felt it stick a little longer

why did you say it like that you could’ve just stopped there they noticed the tone shift you always do this after you speak you fix it too late it already landed you can’t unhear how it sounded now they’re going to replay it later and you’re going to replay it more stop thinking about it stop thinking about it but you already are

I’m just a little tired lately

nothing I can’t shake in the morning

been keeping busy, staying normal

just normal life, nothing to unpack

I smiled like it didn’t matter

like it didn’t stay in the air

they probably didn’t even think twice

but I did, I always do this part later

I told myself it was nothing important

but my timing always feels slightly off

you said it wrong you said it too fast you always fix it after it lands not before not during after now it’s inside their version of you and you can’t take it back you never say it clean the first time it always comes out slightly wrong slightly off slightly too much or not enough

I keep it together most of the time

I really do, I really try

but every sentence feels like a risk

after it leaves my mouth

there’s always a second where I know

I could’ve said it differently

don’t overthink it don’t overthink it but you are overthinking it right now you’re always one step behind your own words you say it then you correct it then you correct the correction and it never stops it never lands right the first time
